ADAMS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
JUNE 6, 2008

The Patter Zone

With apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan.

Wesley:

There’s berberis, cotoneaster, viburnum and arbutus,

Lamium and peonies, phyllitus, phlox, and dianthus,

Dryas ruta, summer squash and celery and cotinus,

And don’t forget Veronica which flowers with no help from us!

The Levels:

There’s …common sense and average and pretty good and sensible,

Logical, predictable, and downright plain conventional,

Stay the course, don’t rock the boat, “inside the lines!,” learn it by rote;

If you stick out, we hate to say, you’ll spend your life quite gullible.

The Dudes:

There's...soccer cleats and alley-oops, and offside traps and safety blitz,

Double fault and corner kick and full court press and stock car pits,

Second serve and nickel defense, stolen bases, interference,

You may know that cricket, rugby, snooker are all loved by Brits!

Ariel:

Our tale is done, you’ve heard it through, These revels were a dream, it’s true,

As you return to normal life, These small enchantments are a clue…

To ways that we can all “stick out," ’til Dudes and Levels sing and shout:

“Weslandia’s the place for me regardless of my ancestry.”

The Adams Schoolers:

The…curtain’s closing quickly now—another school year’s nearly done;

There’s just a couple sun-filled weeks until we turn to summer fun—

With sailing, golf, and fishing trips, or daydreams, reading, backshore dips,

We’ll plant and play and run astray ‘til school begins post-Labor Day.

Finale:

There’s….Earth Day, Smorgs, and field day games; a backshore picnic— four-square games,

An overnight—McWeeny’s Isle!; then trips to Holbrook and museums,

Ten more lunches, morning meetings, art and singing—peacock sightings!

Graduation for the eighth grade—four more days for the rest of us.

—Todd

Baseball Banquet: Castine’s baseball players are invited to a baseball banquet at Brooksville School next Wednesday evening, June 11, at 5:00pm. This is for the combined Brooksville-Castine-Penobscot schools team. Castine players are requested to bring a salad.

From our Sports reporter: A milestone was reached in Brooksville Tuesday evening. After 9 difficult games, many shortened by the mercy rule, the Castine Cougars Little League Team won their first game 21 -16. It was a miraculous comeback. The Cougars were down 15-2 after just two innings. The tears and accusations were flying in the Castine dugout like hits off the B'viller's bats. Tempers were cooled and the Cougars bats got hot. Castine made exciting plays in the field. Cougars daringly advanced on the base paths. The Brooksville bats went cold. Castine scored runs. A lot of runs. They tied the score on a hit to center field, the runner coming around all the way from first base, and then took the lead 16-15. Brooksville tied the score in their half. Castine kept hitting the ball between the mosquitoes and the raindrops and scored five more runs. Brooksville was done, and went down in their half, again on good fielding plays by the Cougars. There was joy. There would be ice cream in everyone's future. The team ran a celebratory lap around the bases. High fives and hugs all around. Dusty, tear-streaked faces, now with smiles, revealed what it means to "touch them all".

Favorite Shirt Day will be next Friday (also Earth Day). Wear your favorite shirt!

Back Shore Tour: With the tide flooding on the Back Shore beach in Castine, Professor Bill McWeeny was herding his fifth and sixth grade science class around the Littoral Zone for a scavenger hunt. They class looked for everything from glass shrimp to sea lettuce. Lily Chase and I searched the beach excitedly to find as many sea creatures as we could in the hour-and-a-half we had. Gordon Lameyer, Gabe Stearns, and Nick Wood were the first to discover some Conga Eels, and soon everyone was looking for them. I have been going to the Back Shore for half of my life and I never knew there were any eels there. They were my most exciting find.

I think our field trip to the beach was fantastic. First, it was a great day for it. Turning the field trip into a scavenger hunt was challenging, but fun, and helped me to focus on what we might find. Also, I’m glad we got extra points for items that weren’t on the list because Lily and I found a lot of those. Now, when I take visitors to the breach I can tell them about, and show them, much more. Wet and covered in sand, we returned to school in time to clean up for the next class.
