We'd like to begin a bi-annual exchange program between the schools in Castine and St. Castin. Here are pertinent documents relating to the plan!

Trip proposal

A Proposal: Allons en France!

Preamble: Our family had a wonderful, superb time in St. Castin, France. The outpouring of welcome, generous sentiments, gifts, and hopes for a long relationship between our two towns and, in particular, our two schools, was beyond what I had hoped or imagined from the trip. Mayor Arthur Finzi is as energetic and supportive of the notion of school exchanges as I am. So are the teachers in St. Castin. And so I thought, “what if….”

Proposal: I would like to begin an exchange program between Adams School and l’Ecole Jean Vincent d’Abbadie in St. Castin.  I foresee taking our 7th and 8th graders together, next March or April (lower air fares), to St. Castin for 7-10 days, and hosting a return trip by the French children the following school year. Thus, each town would make a trip every other year; host every other year.

Finances: For our first year, we would need to raise a lot of money—more than can be done with traditional spaghetti dinners and bottle drives alone! The kids should be expected to conduct a fund raising effort on the same scale as they do currently for a Boston 8th grade trip, that is aiming for $4-5,000. But a further appeal would need to be made for extraordinary funding. I’ve tested the waters a little bit. I think there’s support in the community to raise the money. Perhaps it could be run through the Castine Education Foundation in order to give donors a tax deduction?

Why so soon? Why go first? I think we can raise the money faster than the French and get the exchange started. We have fewer students. This would also buy us two years before the next trip. We could add the trip cost into the school budget—perhaps the best sustainable approach to doing this. Raising $500/per student each year, over two years, is the approximate cost of current 8th grade trips.

Potential benefits: Why we should do this.

1. We live in “New France,” and are fortunate to have a historical and legendary link to a particular old world region; a particular old world town. History lives, and can come alive even more for our students. To the French, Maine’s French history is very real, current, and important. The Baron de St. Castin is very real and important! Only last summer, St. Castin had a massive spectacle celebrating the life and adventures of the baron.

2. We now study French. Our ongoing correspondence with St. Castin, and a culminating trip for out oldest students to live with French families, would make language study concrete, goal-oriented, and practical.

3. If middle school kids get a taste of a foreign culture, it opens their eyes to wider possibilities and varied choices in their high school and college careers. It’s good to see life beyond Maine and the U.S. early in life. The mayor of St. Castin echoes these sentiments on behalf of children in the Bearn region. We both see such exchanges creating aspiration in the next generation.

4. Hosting French children in our homes has the same language benefit, plus the cultural benefit of explaining one’s community and family to a foreigner. The French will experience the same benefit when they host our kids.  Our whole community, and theirs, will participate in a wonderful cultural exchange.

5. This is a good group of kids to start with. They would work hard, rise to the challenge, appreciate the opportunity, and represent us well. They would create the model for the experience of upcoming classes.

6. Finally, as I said to the group in St. Castin, before reading them Governor Baldacci’s letter of greeting, “L’education n’est pas seulement les mathematiques, les sciences, la literature et l’ecriture. Aux Etats-Unis on dit que ‘Il faut apprendre comment d’apprendre.’ Ca c’est le sentier a l’avenir inconnu. C’est ce que nous faison a l’ecole de Castine. Et je crois que les voyages en entranger sont le meilleur facon a comprendre le monde moderne—les autres, et soi meme.”

I returned from France bearing letters, in French, from the kids in St. Castin to deliver to our kids—the response to the May letters we sent them. Most ended with a sign-off to this effect: “I hope to meet you one day, and I hope we’ll be friends! Write me back soon!”
May I have your blessing to proceed past these introductory letters, towards meeting in person? The next step is to gather two classes of Adams School parents and make plans.

Une Proposition : En France d'Allons !

Préambule : Notre famille a eu un temps merveilleux et superbe dans St.  Castin, France. L'épanchement de la bienvenue, des sentiments généreux, des cadeaux, et des espoirs pour un long rapport entre nos deux villes et, en particulier, nos deux écoles, était au delà de ce que j'ai espéré ou ai imaginé du voyage. Maire Arthur Finzi est aussi énergique et de support de la notion des échanges d'école que je suis. Sont ainsi les professeurs de l’ecole de St. Castin. Et ainsi j'ai pensé, "ce qui si...."

Proposition : Je voudrais commencer un programme d'échange entre l'école d'Adams et le de St. Castin. Je prévois prendre les nos 7èmes et 8èmes niveleuses ensemble, mars ou avril prochain (prix inférieurs d'air), à St. Castin pour 7-10 jours, et accueillir un voyage de retour par les enfants français l'année scolaire suivante. Ainsi, chaque ville ferait à un voyage tous les deux ans ; accueillez tous les deux ans.

Finances : Pendant notre première année, nous devrions soulever beaucoup d'argent-plus que peut être fait avec seuls des dîners de gaine. Les gosses devraient être prévus conduire des fonds soulevant l'effort sur la même échelle qu'ils font actuellement pour un 8ème voyage de catégorie de Boston, visant pour $4-5.000. Mais un appel devrait être fait pour le placement extraordinaire. J'ai examiné les eaux un peu. Je pense qu'il y a appui dans la communauté pour soulever l'argent. Peut-être il pourrait être couru par la base d'éducation de Castine afin de donner à des donateurs une retenue d'impôts ?

Pourquoi tellement bientôt ? Pourquoi "allez d'abord?" Je pense que nous pouvons soulever l'argent plus rapidement que le Français et mettre l'échange. Nous avons peu d'étudiants. Ceci nous achèterait également deux ans avant le prochain voyage. Nous pourrions ajouter le coût de voyage dans l'école budget-peut-être la meilleure approche soutenable à faire ceci.

Avantages potentiels : Pourquoi nous devrions faire ceci.

1. Nous habitons en "nouvelle France," et sommes chanceux pour avoir un lien historique et légendaire à une région particulière du vieux monde ; une ville particulière du vieux monde. Les vies d'histoire, et peuvent venir vivant encore plus pour nos étudiants. Pour le Français, l'histoire française du Maine est très vraie et importante. A St. Castin du baron De est très vraie et importante !

2. Nous étudions le français. Notre correspondance continue avec St. Castin, et un voyage culminant pour qu'hors des étudiants les plus âgés vivent avec les familles françaises, effectueraient l'étude de langue concrète, but-orienté, et pratique.

3. Si les eleves de collège obtiennent un goût d'une culture étrangère, elle ouvre leurs yeux aux possibilités et aux choix dans leurs carrières de lycée et d'université. Il est bon de voir la vie au delà du Maine et des ETATS-UNIS tôt dans la vie. Le maire de St. Castin fait écho ces sentiments au nom des enfants dans sa région. Nous tous les deux voyons de tels échanges créer l'aspiration.

4. L'accueil des enfants français dans nos maisons a le même avantage de langue, plus l'avantage culturel d'expliquer la sa communauté et famille à un Étranger. Le Français éprouvera le même avantage quand ils accueillent nos enfants. Notre communauté entière, et leur, participeront à un échange culturel merveilleux.

5.  C'est un bon groupe d’enfants à commencer. Ils travailleraient dur, se lèveraient au défi, apprécieraient l'occasion, et nous représenteraient bien. Ils créeraient le modèle pour l'expérience des classes prochaines.

Je suis retourné de la France avec des lettres, en français, des enfants pour fournir à nos enfants— la réponse aux lettres de Mai où nous les avons envoyées. Les la plupart ont fini avec un sign-off à cet effet: “J’espoir de vous rencontrer un jour, et moi espèrent que nous serons des amis!  Écrivez-moi en arrière bientôt!”

Est-ce que je peux avoir votre bénédiction à procéder après ces lettres d'introduction, vers se réunir chez la personne?  La prochaine étape est recueillir deux classes des parents d'école d'Adams et de faire des plans.
